Press Release – Brig Gen Houston Cantwell, USAF (Ret.), joins the Mitchell Institute Team

The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies is pleased to announce that Brig Gen Houston Cantwell, USAF (Ret.), has joined our team as a Senior Resident Fellow for Airpower Studies. Gen Cantwell is an acknowledged national security expert who planned, led, and flew combat air operations around the globe.

During his 30-year career, Gen Cantwell served as a combat pilot, commander, and strategist. He served four combat tours during Iraqi Freedom, Southern Watch, and Enduring Freedom, where he accumulated over 2,000 flight hours (400 combat), primarily in the F-16, MQ-9, and RQ-4.

Gen Cantwell retired from the position as the Commander of the U.S. Jeanne Holm Center for Officer Accession in Montgomery, AL. Previously he served as the U.S. Forces Japan Director of Operations. Additionally, he served as the Commanding General of NATO’s Alliance Ground Surveillance Force; the initial commander of the 732d Operations Group, employing remotely piloted attack aircraft with new weapons and tactics across multiple areas of operation; and as the Vice Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
