ARLINGTON, VA (September 10, 2020) — The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies is pleased to announce a new entry in its Mitchell Forum short paper series, “Failure is not an Option: Changing the Paradigm on Air Force Logistics” by Lt Col Lucas Choate, United States Air Force. Lt Col Choate is currently assigned to Headquarters Air Force in the Executive Action Group as a speechwriter for the Air Force Chief of Staff. He previously served as the Commander, 27th Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron, Cannon Air Force Base, NM,and has multiple deployments with joint and special operations units. He is a graduate of Army Command and General Staff College and is Airborne and Air Assault qualified.
Air Force sustainment operations have been successful in the past, but the current Air Force logistics design is not ready to support a multi-domain fight from a near-peer adversary. The Air Force must adjust logistics training, planning and policies to prepare for, and win, a fight in today’s highly defended warfighting environment. However, the Air Force currently lacks a road map to achieve this. Logistics should not be a pick-up game during conflict in contested environments. The paradigm of logistics as a long build-up of robust facilities at a time and place favorable to U.S. forces must shift to one of lean, adaptable, and resilient sustainment networks. Status quo and failure are not an option.
